    Optical Integral Field Spectroscopy of NGC 5850

    Here we present the preliminary results of the analysis of VIMOS observations of the central 4.5 kpc of the double-barred galaxy NGC 5850. We use optical diagnostic diagrams to study the main ionization mecahnism across the field of view confirming the LINER nature in the continuum peak location. Also a star-forming (SF) region is found close to it (0.46 kpc), a second SF region is located east of the center (1.6 kpc). Further the data reveals a complex nuclear gas kinematics which is likely to be dominated by the secondary bar.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Joint Optical Flow and Temporally Consistent Semantic Segmentation

    The importance and demands of visual scene understanding have been steadily increasing along with the active development of autonomous systems. Consequently, there has been a large amount of research dedicated to semantic segmentation and dense motion estimation. In this paper, we propose a method for jointly estimating optical flow and temporally consistent semantic segmentation, which closely connects these two problem domains and leverages each other. Semantic segmentation provides information on plausible physical motion to its associated pixels, and accurate pixel-level temporal correspondences enhance the accuracy of semantic segmentation in the temporal domain. We demonstrate the benefits of our approach on the KITTI benchmark, where we observe performance gains for flow and segmentation. We achieve state-of-the-art optical flow results, and outperform all published algorithms by a large margin on challenging, but crucial dynamic objects.Comment: 14 pages, Accepted for CVRSUAD workshop at ECCV 201

    The radio counter-jet of the QSO 3C~48

    We present multi--frequency radio observational results of the quasar 3C~48. The observations were carried out with the Very Large Array (VLA) at five frequencies of 0.33, 1.5, 4.8, 8.4, and 22.5 GHz, and with the Multi--Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) at the two frequencies of 1.6 and 5 GHz. The source shows a one--sided jet to the north within 1\arcsec, which then extends to the northeast and becomes diffuse. Two bright components (N2 and N3), containing most of the flux density are present in the northern jet. The spectral index of the two components is αN20.99±0.12\alpha_{N2}\sim-0.99\pm0.12 and αN30.84±0.23\alpha_{N3}\sim-0.84\pm0.23 (SναS\propto\nu^{\alpha}). Our images show the presence of an extended structure surrounding component N2, suggestive of strong interaction between the jet and the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. A steep--spectrum component, labelled as S, located 0.25 ardsec southwest to the flat--spectrum component which could be the core of 3C 48, is detected at a significance of >15σ>15\sigma.     The Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS): Locating the [O III] wing component in luminous local Type 1 AGN

    Context. The strong asymmetry in the optical [O III] λ5007 emission line is one of the best signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGN) driven warm (∼104 K) ionized gas outflows on host galaxy scales. While large spectroscopic surveys such as the sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) have characterized the kinematics of [O III] for large samples of AGN, estimating the associated energetics requires spatially resolving these outflows with, for example, integral field unit (IFU) studies. Aims. As part of the Close AGN Reference Survey, we obtained spatially resolved IFU spectroscopy for a representative sample of 39 luminous type 1 AGN at 0.01 < z < 0.06 with the multi unit spectroscopic explorer and the visible multi object spectrograph IFUs at the very large telescope to infer the spatial location of the ionized gas outflows. Methods. We compared the 2D light distributions of the [O III] wing to that of the Hβ broad emission line region, a classical point source (PSF). We then used the PSF to distinguish between the unresolved and resolved [O III] wing emission. We further determined its location using spectro-astrometry for the point-like sources. Results. The [O III] wing is spatially unresolved in 23 out of the 36 AGN with > 80% of the flux associated with a point-like source. We measured < 100 pc offsets in the spatial location of the outflow from the AGN nucleus using the spectro-astrometry technique for these sources. For the other 13 AGN, the [O III] wing emission is resolved and possibly extended on several kiloparsec scales. Conclusions. We conclude that [O III] wing emission can be compact or extended in an unbiased luminous AGN sample, where both cases are likely to appear. Electron density in the compact [O III] wing regions (median ne ∼ 1900 cm−3) is nearly a magnitude higher than in the extended ones (median ne ∼ 500 cm−3). The presence of spatially extended and compact [O III] wing emission is unrelated to the AGN bolometric luminosity and to inclination effects, which means other features such as time delays, or mechanical feedback (radio jets) may shape the ionized gas outflow properties

    Discovery of the Optical Afterglow and Host Galaxy of Short GRB 181123B at z = 1.754: Implications for Delay Time Distributions

    We present the discovery of the optical afterglow and host galaxy of the Swift short-duration gamma-ray burst (SGRB) GRB 181123B. Observations with Gemini-North starting ≈9.1 hr after the burst reveal a faint optical afterglow with i ≈ 25.1 mag at an angular offset of 0farcs59 ± 0farcs16 from its host galaxy. Using grizYJHK observations, we measure a photometric redshift of the host galaxy of z=1.770.17+0.30z={1.77}_{-0.17}^{+0.30}. From a combination of Gemini and Keck spectroscopy of the host galaxy spanning 4500–18000 Å, we detect a single emission line at 13390 Å, inferred as Hβ at z = 1.754 ± 0.001 and corroborating the photometric redshift. The host galaxy properties of GRB 181123B are typical of those of other SGRB hosts, with an inferred stellar mass of ≈9.1 × 109 M ⊙, a mass-weighted age of ≈0.9 Gyr, and an optical luminosity of ≈0.9L*. At z = 1.754, GRB 181123B is the most distant secure SGRB with an optical afterglow detection and one of only three at z > 1.5. Motivated by a growing number of high-z SGRBs, we explore the effects of a missing z > 1.5 SGRB population among the current Swift sample on delay time distribution (DTD) models. We find that lognormal models with mean delay times of ≈4–6 Gyr are consistent with the observed distribution but can be ruled out to 95% confidence, with an additional ≈one to five Swift SGRBs recovered at z > 1.5. In contrast, power-law models with ∝t −1 are consistent with the redshift distribution and can accommodate up to ≈30 SGRBs at these redshifts. Under this model, we predict that ≈1/3 of the current Swift population of SGRBs is at z > 1. The future discovery or recovery of existing high-z SGRBs will provide significant discriminating power on their DTDs and thus their formation channels

    Building Scene Models by Completing and Hallucinating Depth and Semantics

    Building 3D scene models has been a longstanding goal of computer vision. The great progress in depth sensors brings us one step closer to achieving this in a single shot. However, depth sensors still produce imperfect measurements that are sparse and contain holes. While depth completion aims at tackling this issue, it ignores the fact that some regions of the scene are occluded by the foreground objects. Building a scene model would therefore require to hallucinate the depth behind these objects. In contrast with existing methods that either rely on manual input, or focus on the indoor scenario, we introduce a fully-automatic method to jointly complete and hallucinate depth and semantics in challenging outdoor scenes. To this end, we develop a two-layer model representing both the visible information and the hidden one. At the heart of our approach lies a formulation based on the Mumford-Shah functional, for which we derive an effective optimization strategy. Our experiments evidence that our approach can accurately fill the large holes in the input depth maps, segment the different kinds of objects in the scene, and hallucinate the depth and semantics behind the foreground objects

    Detecting change processes in dynamic networks by frequent graph evolution rule mining

    The analysis of the temporal evolution of dynamic networks is a key challenge for understanding complex processes hidden in graph structured data. Graph evolution rules capture such processes on the level of small subgraphs by describing frequently occurring structural changes within a network. Existing rule discovery methods make restrictive assumptions on the change processes present in networks. We propose EvoMine, a frequent graph evolution rule mining method that, for the first time, supports networks with edge insertions and deletions as well as node and edge relabelings. EvoMine defines embedding-based and event-based support as two novel measures to assess the frequency of rules. These measures are based on novel mappings from dynamic networks to databases of union graphs that retain all evolution information relevant for rule mining. Using these mappings the rule mining problem can be solved by frequent subgraph mining. We evaluate our approach and two baseline algorithms on several real datasets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first empirical comparison of rule mining algorithms for dynamic networks

    Improved Stixel Estimation Based on Transitivity Analysis in Disparity Space

    We present a novel method for stixel construction using a calibrated collinear trinocular vision system. Our method takes three conjugate stereo images at the same time to measure the consistency of disparity values by means of the transitivity error in disparity space. Unlike previous stixel estimation methods that are built based on a single disparity map, our proposed method introduces a multi-map fusion technique to obtain more robust stixel calculations. We also apply a polynomial curve fitting approach to detect an accurate road manifold, using the v-disparity space which is built based on a confidence map, which further supports accurate stixel calculation. Comparing the depth information from the extracted stixels (using stixel maps) with depth measurements obtained from a highly accurate LiDAR range sensor, we evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. Experimental results indicate a significant improvement of 13.6% in the accuracy of stixel detection compared to conventional binocular vision
